Mrs Frances Norton, BA, MA

Colleagues will be very sorry to learn of the death, on 16 September 2013, of Mrs Frances Norton, former Head of Public Service Strategy in the Library.

A New Zealander, Frances graduated from the University of Otago with a BA in music.  She qualified as a librarian before coming to the UK, working first at Leeds Polytechnic before moving into the NHS, running the medical libraries at York District Hospital, then at Seacroft and St. James’ University Hospital here in Leeds.

Frances joined Leeds University Library in 1999 as Health Faculty Team Leader, also managing Leeds Medical Information.  In 2003 she was appointed to a new senior manager post – Head of Public Service Strategy, focusing on customer services, estates management and developing the Library’s marketing and promotional activities.  Frances was well known for her creativity and innovative approach to engaging users with library services, and colleagues will remember her flair and enthusiasm.  Frances left in 2004 to become Librarian at the Wellcome Trust in London.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at St. Olave’s Church, 8 Hart Street, London, EC3R 7NB, on Sunday 22 September, followed by a private family funeral on Monday, on which day the flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast in Frances’ memory.
