M&S Heritage Trail shortlisted for innovation award
The recently launched M&S Heritage Trail - a collaboration between M&S, two Leeds graduates and Leeds City Council - has been shortlisted for a Group Travel Award for Innovation.
The two students – Kiara White (Philosophy, 2011) and Abigail Fox (MA History and Philosophy of Science, 2012) - worked as paid interns on a five month project to research, design and produce a leaflet with a heritage trail leading from the Company Archive to a new M&S stall on Kirkgate Market, highlighting places of particular significance to the city's industrial past on the way.
Trail leaflets and maps can be picked up at the archive or at the M&S heritage stall in Kirkgate Market. The whole trail takes around and hour and a half to complete. Highlights of the tour include the site of the very first Marks and Spencer shop – a Penny Bazaar in the Victoria Quarter’s Cross Arcade – and Victoria Gardens.
The nomination is a fantastic recognition of all the hard work that went into the trail and the distinctive way in which the partnership between M&S, the University, and Leeds City Council was able to produce something unique. Importantly, it also offered a paid route for students in Arts and Design to practically apply their academic skills, either research or arts based, to a tangible project.
