Anthony Moyes, MBE, BScEng, DEng, HonLLD, CEng, FIChemEng, FCGI

We are very sorry to announce the death of Dr Anthony Moyes, Honorary Graduate of the University and former member of the Court and the Council, on 19 January 2013.

Dr Moyes enjoyed a highly successful career in chemical engineering, culminating in his appointment as European Director of Engineering for a large American international corporation. He had a lengthy association with the University, of which he was a very staunch supporter.  In the early 1970s, he became a director of University of Leeds Industrial Services Limited (ULIS), at that time the University’s principal technology transfer agency. In 1980, he took on the chairmanship of ULIS; he held office for more than a decade and was assiduous throughout this time in championing the growth of links with industry. He also served as a member of the Court from 1982 to 2000, and of the Council from 1982 to 1991.

Extensively involved with the Institution of Chemical Engineers, Dr Moyes was its Vice-President from 1972 to 1974. He was also founder Chairman of the Yorkshire Branch of the Institution.

His commitment to voluntary service within the community found expression in the time that he devoted to a range of organisations and enterprises, including Leeds Civic Trust, the Leeds Art Theatre, Leeds Voluntary Service and Seacroft Adventure Playground.

In recognition of Dr Moyes’s extensive accomplishments over the course of his distinguished career, the University conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws upon him in 1987.

The funeral will take the form of a private family service. However, colleagues and friends are most welcome to join the family at Haley’s Hotel, Shire Oak Road, Headingley, Leeds, at 3.15pm on Wednesday, 6 February 2013. In place of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, for which a collection plate will be available at the hotel.

Dr Moyes is survived by his wife, Doreen, four sons, Martin, Jason, Mark and Paul, and two daughters, Jill and Rachel.

In memory of Dr Moyes, the flag will be flown at half-mast on 6 February.
