VC’s week – 15 October 2012 - Open meetings, CBI and Open Day
A regular update from Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Arthur.
It was the first of the strategy refresh open meetings last week, and it was good to see and listen to so many colleagues. The discussions were wide-ranging and we enjoyed your challenging comments and questions – the meetings certainly gave me and the senior team plenty of food for thought.
I’m still keen to encourage more debate and discussion around the refresh; the strategy map is an important document that will guide our activities for the next two to three years at least, so it’s vital that we get it right. The final open meeting is on 23 October in the Great Hall and there’s time to sign up to attend via the website if you wish to book a place. Alternatively, you can feedback through email or via the forms distributed in last month’s Reporter – contact the Communications (37911) team to request another form.
The University hosted the annual Confederation of British Industry dinner this week, welcoming business people from across Yorkshire. Sir Roger Carr, president of the CBI, gave the opening address and the keynote speech was given by Newsnight’s Gavin Esler, who is also an alumnus (MA in Anglo-Irish literature from our School of English). Both talks were superb and thought provoking and it was nice to see Gavin back on campus, without having to be grilled by him!
Nominations for the annual Vice-Chancellor’s Health & Safety Awards opened this week, and I’d urge everyone to consider nominating a colleague or team for one of these important awards. There are six categories of award – including one that I personally select – and you can find full details here.
Campus was buzzing on Saturday as thousands of prospective students and their parents came to get a taste of what life as a student at Leeds might be like. These events are a vital recruitment tool for us, so many thanks to all colleagues who made the campus look stunning and those who gave up their time at the weekend to contribute to making the day such a success – your contributions are much appreciated.
