Dr John (Jack) Lewis
We are very sorry to let members know that Dr John (Jack) Lewis, former Director of the Wellcome Marine Laboratory, died on 9 October 2012.
Dr Lewis joined the University as an Assistant Lecturer in the then Department of Zoology in 1954. He went on to become an international authority on rocky shore ecology, carrying out extensive research on the development and distribution of organisms in the area where land and sea meet, between the high and low tide zones. In later years, he took a keen interest in marine pollution and conservation issues. For much of his career, Dr Lewis was based at the Wellcome Marine Laboratory at Robin Hoods Bay; he was designated Director of the Laboratory in 1972. The Laboratory closed at the end of 1982 and Dr Lewis took retirement in the following year.
The (secular) funeral service will take place on Thursday, 18 October at 2pm, at Woodlands Crematorium, Woodlands Drive, Scarborough, YO12 6QN. As a mark of the Universitys esteem, the flag will be flown at half-mast on the Parkinson Building on that day.
An obituary is being prepared.
