Emeritus Professor Peter Gosden – funeral details

Members will be sorry to learn of the death, on 15 September 2012, of Emeritus Professor Peter Gosden.

A distinguished historian of education, Peter Gosden joined the then Department of Education as a Lecturer in 1960. Promoted to Senior Lecturer and then Reader over the course of the next eleven years, he was appointed to a Chair in the History of Education in 1979.

Within the University and beyond its confines, Professor Gosden’s contributions were remarkable for their substance, extent and duration.  They included serving as Chairman of the School of Education for two separate terms, as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (from 1985 to 1987), and as a member of the Senate for nearly a quarter of a century – and, at various times and often as chairman, of all its major committees.  He was President of the AUT Leeds Local Association from 1970 to 1972.  Externally, he took a leading part in the affairs of several organisations prominent in the educational arena, including the Joint Matriculation Board, of which he was Chairman, and the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers.

The funeral service will be held at 12.00 noon on Tuesday 2 October 2012 at St Giles Church, Leeds Road/Church Hill, Bramhope, LS16, with refreshments afterwards in the Church Hall.  Family flowers only please: donations to Wheatfields Hospice would be gratefully received.

As a mark of the University’s esteem, the flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast on the day of the funeral.

An obituary is being prepared.
