Going for Gold: midweek update

Find out how our Leeds Olympians are getting on so far this week and what's left to come.

Yesterday afternoon, Leeds alumna Ashleigh Ball represented Team GB as part of the women’s hockey team, beating South Korea 5-3. This is great news following on from their success against China at the weekend and they now lead their group with three games to play.

Unfortunately, student Ed Scott and alumnus Matt Holland didn’t get on so well in their men’s water polo match against group favourites Serbia who took the bronze medal at Beijing.  Great Britain lost 21-7, making this their second defeat with three games left to play.

University of Leeds student, Jack Oliver, will represent Team GB in weightlifting today at 10am.  This will be Jack’s first Olympics, after coming eighth at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and rapidly rising up the ranks in his class over the past six years.  The medal ceremony will take place at 8pm.

Jonathan Hammond, a university alumnus, will compete in the men’s 50m rifle prone on Friday at 7pm with a great chance of Olympic success, having won Bronze, Silver and two Gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Congratulations so far, and best of luck to all our athletes!
