Laurence Keates

We are very sorry to let members know of the death, on 27 May, of Mr Laurence Keates who was appointed Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literature in 1961.

He was promoted to Lecturer in the following year and to Senior Lecturer in 1972. Mr Keates took a prominent part in the considerable development of Portuguese studies within the University; his international standing was shown by his appointment as a vice-president of the International Association of Lusitanists. He retired in 1989.

A Requiem Mass will take place on Friday, 8 June, at 11.00 am, at Holy Name Church, Otley Old Road, Leeds 16.  There are to be no flowers but donations to the international development charity Progressio (www.progressio.org.uk) would be very welcome.

In memory of Mr Keates, the flag will be flown at half-mast on the Parkinson Building on 8 June.
