Dr Donald Nicholson

We are very sorry to let members know of the death of Dr Donald Nicholson, former Senior Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology, on 12 May 2012.

Dr Nicholson was appointed to a Research Fellowship in 1946 in the then Department of Bacteriology. He was made Lecturer in 1950 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1964. Although he retired in 1981, Dr Nicholson continued assiduously to pursue his scientific interests; in particular, he regularly updated, refined and expanded his Metabolic Pathways Chart, designed to illustrate chemical reactions within cells and metabolic interrelationships, with which his name is indelibly associated. To date, there have been twenty-two editions, with over one million copies printed.

The funeral service will take place at Rawdon Crematorium, Leeds Road, Rawdon, Leeds, LS19 6JP, at 12.20 pm, on Tuesday, 22 May 2012. In Dr Nicholson's memory, the flag will be flown at half-mast on the Parkinson Building on that day.

We understand that there will also be a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Dr Nicholson during June. Further details will be published here, when available.

An obituary is being prepared.
