New procedure relating to staff on fixed funding or fixed term contracts

The University and the campus trade unions have recently agreed a new procedure to support the employment security of staff on fixed funding or on a fixed term contract.

The new arrangements have been agreed to ensure a more effective and equitable way of managing the University's fixed term contract staff and to ensure legal compliance particularly in relation to fixed term contract regulations.

This policy applies to all fixed term contract staff and to staff who are not on a fixed term contract but whose post has fixed funding.

As part of the new procedure staff with more than 3 years service will normally no longer be fixed term on the next renewal of their contract.  Enhanced redundancy payments will be available to staff with over 4 years service if there is no appropriate alternative employment.  In addition there is also an opportunity for some staff to consider an extended time on the redeployment register where eligible.

If you are affected by this change in procedure you will be contacted by a member of the Faculty HR team over the coming weeks and months either personally or by letter.  They will advise you of the changes and how they affect you.

The Faculty implementation plan is as follows:

Implementation plan

  • Current staff who are not fixed term but whose post is subject to fixed funding will receive confirmation that they are covered by the procedure by early June
  • Where a post holder has over 3 years service consideration will be given at or before the next renewal of their contract as to whether they will be transferred from a fixed term contract (although they will remain on fixed funding).
