Why media and democracy matter

Professor John Keane from the University of Sydney will talk about why freedom of communication is so precious in the ICS annual Jay Blumler lecture at Leeds on 26 January 2011.

Professor Keane's lecture, entitled 'Power, Silence, Catastrophe: why media and democracy matter in the early years of the twenty-first century' will be given:

Professor Jay Blumler who has played a central role not only in establishing media research in the UK, but also in the early years of our Institute.  His work is particularly concerned with the role of the media in democratic life and the values of public service broadcasting. Currently Emeritus Professor at ICS, he will be present at the lecture.
