Fellowship for Professor Ian Robertson
Professor Ian Robertson, Head of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Professor Robertson is best known for his work on monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) - semiconductor technology that has revolutionised the communications industry, allowing optical fibre and wireless devices to be deployed worldwide.
His research has focused on new ways of designing and making multi-chip modules using MMICs. He is currently leading a project with Loughborough University and Imperial College, studying new techniques for fabricating novel three-dimensional micro-electromechanical microwave components.
With 385,000 members in 160 countries, the IEEE is the world's largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honour and an important career achievement.
The citation for Professor Robertson states that his election was for: "contributions to monolithic microwave integrated circuits and millimetre-wave system-in-package technology."
Professor Robertson said: "I am really delighted to have been honoured in this way. The School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has a long history of working with the IEEE. Our Institute of Microwaves and Photonics has an outstanding pedigree in microwave engineering and I am proud to have made my own contribution to that legend."
Professor Robertson has more than 25 years of experience of University research and teaching and was appointed to the Centenary Chair in Microwave and Millimetre-Wave Circuits at the University of Leeds in 2004. In September 2011 he was appointed as the Head of the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, having previously been the Director of Learning and Teaching for more than five years. He was Technical Programme Committee Chair for the 2011 European Microwave Week and has published more than 350 conference and journal papers.
