Professor Ian Kemp

We are very sorry to have to report the death, on 16 September 2011, of Professor Ian Kemp, who was West Riding Professor and Head of the Department of Music from 1977 to 1981.

Professor Kemp then left Leeds to take up the Chair of Music at the University of Manchester.  A distinguished teacher, musicologist and scholar, Professor Kemp wrote authoritatively on a number of composers, notably Berlioz and Sir Michael Tippett, of whose Fourth Symphony he was the dedicatee.

Whilst at Manchester, Professor Kemp served for a number of years as that University's representative on the Court here.

An obituary was published in The Times on 8 October 2011.
