The eye of the needle - forgotten sewing skills

The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery is hosting a hands-on workshop from 2-4pm on Saturday 27 August, where you can practice forgotten, but ever-so-useful sewing skills.

The workshop will be led by Margaret Chalmers, from the University's International Textile Archive (ULITA).  Margaret will use John Currie's painting Seamstresses as her inspiration for the workshop.  Following a short introduction to the painting, the workshop will take you through the secrets of stitching, buttonholes, and embroidery - all amidst the charm of original 19th and 20th century samplers.

The workshop is suitable for beginners and advanced stitchers, as well as anyone interested in the history and art of hand sewing and needlework.

You can bring your own project to work on, learn and practice, or start something new.

The workshop is free but places are limited, so please bookyour place in advance by emailing Zsuzsa, by telephoning 0113 343 2777 or online.
