Change of EPSRC publication policy

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has introduced a new policy on open access, which comes into effect immediately.

The new policy applies to any EPSRC-funded research publication submitted on or after 1 September 2011.

What is the policy?

The policy states that all EPSRC-funded research publications must be published as openly accessible documents - freely available online to anyone who has access to the internet.

How do I comply?

There are two common models of open access publication:

  • "Gold" - publishing directly in a subscription-free open access journal - usually involves an up-front "pay-to-publish" fee
  • "Green" - deposition of the peer-reviewed article (as accepted for publication) in an online repository (after any embargo period required by the publishing journal)

Leeds grantholders can comply with the policy by depositing their output in the White Rose Research Outputs (WRRO) on-line repository, via the Symplectic publications database. There is no fee for this service. Authors should indicate any embargo period so that this can be managed by WRRO on their behalf: it is not necessary to wait for the embargo period to elapse before starting the deposit process.
