Professor J A S Grenville

We are very sorry to have to report the death of the distinguished historian, Professor John Grenville, who held the Chair of International History at Leeds from 1966 to 1969.

Born in Berlin in 1928, Professor Grenville was educated in this country and read History at the LSE. He came to Leeds from the University of Nottingham where he was successively Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer and Reader. Whilst at Leeds, he was responsible for the introduction of the undergraduate degree programme in International History and Politics.

Professor Grenville left Leeds in order to take up the Chair of Modern History and the Headship of the Department at the University of Birmingham.
