Support for Japan and for our Japanese Community
The University community is united in our sympathy and concern for the people of Japan and for our Japanese students and staff.
We offer our help and support to all our Japanese students and staff who are coping with being far away from the immediate support of friends and family at this time. One support meeting hosted by the International Student Office has already taken place and students and staff are now invited to meet together again on 25 March 4.30pm - 6pm in the Student Common Room, 12th Floor, Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Building.
The International Student Office at 18 Blenheim Terrace is a point of contact for any students and staff seeking support. We can arrange for students and staff to discuss issues in Japanese if this is preferred (Tel: 0113 343 3930, Email: internationalstudents@leeds.ac.uk).
The Vice-Chancellor is also writing to the University's contacts in Japan to express our sympathy and support.
Leeds University Union has been supporting the Japanese Society in their fundraising activity since the disaster. Society members have been very active in raising funds for the British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal. The society is collecting donations in the Students' Union and is holding events to enable students and staff to show support for Japan including:
- A 'Lantern Reflection' event on 24 March at 7pm in the outside area of the Students' Union Terrace Bar. Lanterns will be on sale in the Students' Union foyer during the week for a donation of £3. On Thursday evening everyone will come together with their lanterns for a special time of reflection. More information is available from luu.japanese@leeds.ac.uk
- '1000 origami cranes for Japan' on 28 March 3.30pm-7.30pm at the Global Café, in the Students' Union Lounge, organised jointly with the International Student Office. Participants will pay a minimum donation of £2.00 to learn how to make an origami crane - a mystical bird in Japan - and find out more about Japanese culture. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. During the event participants will create 1000 cranes which will be displayed within the University to show our support for the people of Japan.
