Jean Le Patourel

Members will be very sorry to learn of the death, on 20 January 2011, of Mrs Jean Le Patourel, former Lecturer in Archaeology in the then Department of Adult Education and Extra-Mural Studies.

Mrs Le Patourel was a member of staff from 1967 until her retirement in 1980.  During that time, her stimulating teaching and sensitivity to the needs of adult learners won her a notably loyal following among students who came from a wide variety of backgrounds. Mrs Le Patourel was also a prolific and successful scholar in a number of areas of archaeological research, including medieval pottery on which she was a nationally recognised authority.  She was highly active in several professional societies, and did much to develop medieval interests in the Yorkshire Archaeological Society.

Mrs Le Patourel was married to John Le Patourel, who was Professor of Mediaeval History at Leeds from 1945 to 1974.  She is survived by a daughter and three sons.

The funeral will be held at Lawnswood Crematorium, Otley Road, Leeds LS16  6AH, on Friday, 18 February 2011, at 12.20 pm.  There are to be family flowers only but, as an alternative to flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, c/o H Eaton and Sons, Funeral Directors, Ashlands Road, Ilkley, LS29 8JT.

In memory of Mrs Le Patourel, the flag will be flown at half-mast on the Parkinson Building next Friday.
