Winners of the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Health and Safety 2010
Colleagues’ continuing innovation, diligence and good practice in heath and safety were recognised at the prize-giving ceremony for the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Health and Safety.
"This year's winners are all outstanding examples of excellence in health and safety," said the Vice-Chancellor. "The health and safety figures suggest that we've already achieved significant improvement, and it's now really important that we continue this great work so that health and safety is embedded in the day to day working of the University."
The Gold award went to Professor Paul Harrison on behalf of the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Health and Safety Committee, for its work in creating an entirely different, more effective process for summoning first aiders via a pager system. The new system was supported by a promotional campaign which quickly engaged staff, students and contractors.
Elaine Evans (School of Design) received a Silver award for developing three health and safety training videos for students. The videos are available through the Virtual Learning Environment and provide guidance on how to safely use key pieces of equipment in the design studios.
The Bronze award was given to Philip Cale (School of Physics and Astronomy). He noticed that a gas main in a campus car park was regularly nudged by vehicles and, taking the 'me+you' message to heart, brought this to the attention of Estate Services so the situation could be rectified.
Two Beacons of Good Practice certificates were awarded for health and safety initiatives that are widely transferable across the campus community. The first went to Katja Nieminen (Leeds University Business School) for identifying and implementing changes to the way in which the faculty's off-campus visits and fieldwork are carried out. The second award was given to the Faculty of Engineering Health and Safety Committee, headed by Professor Peter Jimack, which developed a new, user-friendly health and safety handbook for faculty staff and students.
Certificates of Commendation were also awarded, in recognition of staff commitment to health and safety to:

- Henry Gauci, Faculty of Biological Sciences
- Kevin Banks, Andrew Brown and Paul Campbell, Cleaning Services
- Professor Nigel Smith on behalf of Professor Lam, technicians and postgraduate researchers at George Earle Structures Laboratory in the Faculty of Engineering
- Doctor Paul Beal, Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine
- Paul Marriott, Procurement Team in Estate Services
- Doctor Stella Cottrell, Pat Dixon and Sitara Akram in the Lifelong Learning Centre
