The Role of Banking in the UK – Q&A event

A 90-minute question and answer event to debate the role of banks in the UK will be held at Leeds University Business School (LUBS) on Friday 19 November.

The first in a series of events being arranged by the newly formed Independent Commission on Banking, it is an opportunity to question and debate the subject with leading experts and contribute to the formulation of recommendations to government.

The Independent Commission on Banking, chaired by Sir John Vickers, has been charged with considering structural and related non-structural reforms to the UK banking sector to promote financial stability and competition and to make recommendations to the UK government in September 2011.  The commission has published an issues paper which invites submissions from all interested parties. It is now in evidence-gathering mode and this session is an important part of the process.

The chair for the evening is Clare Spottiswoode of the Banking Commission. Ms Spottiswoode currently chairs Gas Strategies and is European Chair and NED of Energy Solutions, a US nuclear waste company and NED of Tullow Oil, and G4S, both FTSE 100 companies. She was also Director General of Ofgas between 1993 and 1998. The panel will consist of representatives from banks or related bodies and respected and knowledgeable commentators.

The format of the event will be:
4pm - 4.30pm - Registration and refreshments. Leeds University Business School
4.30pm - 6pm - Debate and discussion. Room 1.33 Leeds University Business School
