UCU-NUS demonstration

UCU and NUS have called a demonstration in London on 10 November to oppose proposed changes to the funding of higher education.

We are aware that some staff will want to attend the demonstration, and I have written to heads of schools and services  and have asked them to be flexible in approving leave requests where these can be accommodated given school/service commitments and specifically the need to cover students' teaching.   In particular, staff taking leave on 10 November should be asked to ensure that lectures and classes are rearranged appropriately.

Students who do not attend lectures and classes should be marked as 'absent' in the usual way, but the expectation is that, other things being equal, they would not normally suffer detriment for absence that day.
