Saxton Map
Christopher Saxton, the greatest of Elizabethan map-makers, was born near Leeds. He created the first county atlas of England and Wales. His Yorkshire map, much the largest, shows Leeds as a modest town of the 1570s.

Dragon and Butterfly
A page from an early-sixteenth-century prayerbook decorated possibly by the German artist Jacob Elsner. The border has acanthus leaves, deadnettle, borage, a strawberry and a butterfly, and the dragon forms a zoomorphic initial 'S' beginning a prayer to the Virgin "Sancta maria perpetua virgo".
