Research Excellence Framework consultation

Universities UK has welcomed the publication today of a consultation by HEFCE, on behalf of the four UK higher education funding bodies, on the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The REF is the new process for assessing research in UK higher education institutions.

Professor Steve Smith, President of Universities UK, said: "We welcome the publication of HEFCE's consultation on proposals for the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

"We are pleased that HEFCE is seeking input from the sector and more widely. We know that institutions will engage fully in this process. Their responses will help the process to move forward constructively.

"UUK will also respond in full to the consultation. We are pleased to see the consultation inviting views from the sector on how to deal with a number of key issues, such as research intensity and assessing research impact. Our key objectives for the REF are for it to maintain the confidence of the community and wider stakeholders, that it is robust and fit for purpose, and that it will keep the administration required by institutions to a minimum."
