Town and Gown: Remembering Sir Michael Sadler
100 years have passed since Sir Michael Sadler’s Vice-Chancellorship at the University and two exhibitions this autumn are celebrating his legacy.
Sir Michael, a major collector of British modernist art, was pivotal in shaping the artistic world in Leeds during his time here, by his involvement in the Leeds Art Club, the Leeds Art Gallery, and in helping to found the Leeds Art Collections Fund.
The Sadler gift
From 6 September to 17 December 2011 the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery will stage "The Sadler Gift" exhibition, highlighting Sir Michael's role in the development of the University Art Collection. The exhibition explores his gift of paintings, drawings, and prints to the University in 1923. This gift still represents the core of the University Art Collection.
Opening night - 6 September 2011, 6-8pm. All welcome.
Sadler and the shawls
The University of Leeds International Textiles Archive (ULITA) also joins in the Sadler centenary celebrations with its exhibition of the Kashmir Shawl Collection, showcasing its associations with Sir Michael Sadler.
The exhibition, which runs from 13 September 2011 to 30 March 2012, will explore the origins, fashion, construction and designs of the Kashmir shawl, as well as the history of this textile collection at Leeds. ULITA cares for over thirty full shawls and hundreds of fragments of Kashmir and Paisley shawls, many of which were donated soon after the First World War by Sir Michael on his return from carrying out educational research in India.
