Maths in the City win for Leeds tutor

Leeds PGCE and maths support tutor Liz Meenan has won in a Maths in the City competition launched by Marcus du Sautoy.

Liz's entry, The Mathematics of Tiling, was inspired by the tiling patterns which can be found in the Tiled Hall cafe at Leeds Art Gallery and Central Library.

The parquet floors, tiled walls, ceilings and staircases display colourful Victorian tiling patterns using triangles, squares, hexagons, and rectangles.  Liz explained why these particular shapes were used to create the patterns and why they are so special.

Read Liz's winning entry, and learn how to create your own patterns using folded paper shapes on the Maths in the City website.
