Fees and funding

Changes to higher education funding from 2012 are likely to make prospective students more discriminating about their choice of university. With this in mind, the University of Leeds faces three challenges in setting its fee. It must:

  • replace the cuts in the HEFCE teaching grant
  • continue to invest in teaching and infrastructure to meet higher student expectations
  • offer enhanced financial support and investment in outreach to meet our commitments to disadvantaged students

A single undergraduate fee of £9,000 is proposed in order to meet these challenges. Our proposals recognise the importance of being able to demonstrate the consistent value of a University of Leeds degree, irrespective of discipline. Prospective students will have heightened levels of expectation and will make an association between the quality of the student experience and our fees.

We have doubled our combined investment in outreach and financial support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to over £16 million. This recognises our continued commitment to support clear pathways for both young people and adults from all backgrounds to the University of Leeds. Our imaginative financial support scheme, targeted at areas of greatest need, proposes to offer the student a choice of the most appropriate option for them from a fee waiver, a contribution towards accommodation costs or a bursary. Depending on their personal circumstances, students will therefore incur a fee in the range from £3,000 to £9,000.

HEFCE has announced the funding available for universities and colleges for the financial year 2011/12.  Read more about the HEFCE announcement.  A White Paper on the future of higher education is expected to be published in June.
