For Staff

Digital Learning Programme

This programme will provide the capability to capture, manage, store and deliver multimedia resources created during teaching and events, at desktops, during interactive teaching sessions and videoconferencing calls.

The Digital Learning Programme (DLP) comprises four strands; Lecture Capture, Multimedia Management, Desktop Videoconferencing and Interactive Sessions.

Lecture Capture Project
The lecture capture project provides the capability for lectures to be recorded in all centrally managed teaching spaces capturing the key aural and visual elements of a lecture for students to replay via the VLE. The system will be linked to the timetabling software to allow automated recordings of lectures, where this has been agreed in advance. Editing and publication of scheduled lecture capture does not need any desktop recording software. For quick guides on editing and publication see IT.

In addition, staff will be able to make their own ad-hoc recordings in teaching spaces or by using software on their desktop PC, laptop or mac for publication to the VLE. The lecture capture system will also be valuable for recording research seminars, events and other University activities.

Mediasite by Sonic Foundry, a world leader in video content management, is the supplier of the system, and there will be a programme of training to support staff preparing to use the new system.  A new Policy on Audio or Video Recording for Educational Purposes sets out a framework governing use of the system.

For more details about the lecture capture project please contact the Project Manager, John Lynch.

Multimedia Management Project
The Multimedia Management project will deliver a single multimedia repository to support the creation, storage, management and publication of the University’s audio and video assets.  These assets include at-desk, academic-produced educational content for publication to students via the VLE; educational and marketing material for internal and external publication, for example to University websites or iTunesU; student produced audio/video for assessment via the VLE; and research materials for internal sharing or external publication.

Sonic Foundry’s Mediasite has also been chosen to provide a multimedia repository to support the creation, storage, management and publication of the University’s audio and video assets.  These assets include at desk academic produced educational content; educational and marketing material for internal and external publication; student produced audio/video for assessment via the VLE; and research materials for internal sharing or external publication.

Staff and students will be able to share content through a new Campus YouTube powered by MediaSite.  Selected content will also be showcased on the University’s YouTube and iTunes U channels, offering free access to world-class learning resources.

For more information on the multimedia management project, please contact the Project Manager, Michelle Hewitt.

Desktop Videoconferencing
The desktop video conferencing project will provide the capability for basic videoconferencing to desktops and integrate with popular office tools such as e-mail and calendars. This will open up communication between individuals and groups for basic, at desk, ad-hoc communication with audio web-camera video, text chats and screen sharing functionality. Examples of use include business meetings, recruitment interviews and pastoral / supervision meetings. Further information about this project will be provided shortly.

Interactive Sessions tools
Interactive sessions software is an advanced version of desktop videoconferencing that provides the additional functionality to prepare, run and manage interactive classroom sessions, research meetings, part-time and distance learning modules, virtual open days and staff training sessions. The software provides tools for synchronous discussion and interaction using web-cameras, speaking via a headset or an open microphone, with text chat, whiteboard and screen share functionality.

In addition advanced features such as the ability to assign participants to group breakout areas and instant messaging enable better interaction between participants. Further information about this project will be provided shortly.
