We need healthy volunteers to take part in a microbiome/bowel cancer research study.
Researchers at the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust are carrying out a study to investigate whether the microbiome of patients who develop bowel cancer at a young age (less than 50) is different from that of patients who develop bowel cancer at an older age and that of healthy volunteers.
Bowel cancer is increasing in this younger age group and the exact cause is not known. The microbiome (microbes within the bowel) could be playing a role but this has not yet been investigated. The researchers need healthy volunteers to take part.
Taking part would involve completing a 3 day food diary, a short questionnaire and collecting a stool (poo) sample. All of this can be done from home and won’t require any hospital/University visits or tests.
Who can take part? You can take part if you:
- Are a member of staff or student at the University of Leeds or Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
- Do not have any serious medical conditions.
- Are aged over 16.
- Have not travelled abroad in the previous 2 weeks.
- Have not taken antibiotics within the last 6 months.
- Have never had bowel surgery, bowel cancer or polyps, chemotherapy, radiotherapy to the pelvis or a colostomy.
- Do not have inflammatory bowel disease or infectious bowel disease.
- Have never had a colonoscopy (camera test of the bowel).
