This study explores how performing a stressful task affects your brain activity (EEG) and the potential for dietary supplements to influence this relationship. One 2 hour study visit.
The effects of dietary supplements on EEG responses to stress
Ethics number: 17-0235; granted 30 October 2017.
Healthy, medication free (excluding oral contraceptives) participants wanted for study exploring how performing a stressful task affects your brain activity (EEG) and the potential for dietary supplements to influence this relationship.
The study entails:
One screening visit (approx. 25 mins)
One study visit (approx. 2 hrs)
One collection of measures outside of the laboratory after your study visit (3 times over 6 hours).
Eligibility criteria:
18 50 years
Healthy, medication free
Body mass index ?18 and ?30 kg/m2
Experiencing mild subjective stress (assessed by questionnaire).
On the study day you will be given one of the following treatments in tablet form:
1. Magnesium + Vitamins B6,9,12 + Green tea
2. Magnesium + Vitamins B6,9,12 + Rhodiola extract
3. Magnesium + Vitamins B6,9,12 + Green tea + Rhodiola extract
4. Placebo
Shortly after, you will complete 2 stressful tasks designed to make you think on your feet. An EEG cap will then be fitted and you will complete 2 computer based cognitive tests of attention whilst wearing the EEG cap.
*Please note, one of the cognitive tests involves viewing mildly distressing images (including staged male on female violence). Over the two hours of your visit you will have your heart rate and blood pressure, subjective feelings and mood, and cortisol (sample taken from a chewing on a cotton swab) measured.
Upon leaving the laboratory you will collect these measures an additional 3 times over 6 hours as you go about your normal routine.
Participants will receive £60 for completion of the study. To confirm eligibility please complete the screening questionnaire.
